Welcome! The Toro Learning and Testing Center is the Campus Tutoring Center.

We seek to help students recognize their own potential and to help them improve the skills they need to function more effectively in an increasingly diverse and demanding college environment. We offer free learning assistance to currently enrolled and matriculated CSUDH students who are working on CSUDH course assignments.

How to Prepare for Tutoring

• Attend class: tutoring is a great way to supplement your learning experience, but it is not a substitute for class. It is vital that you attend class, read the text, and bring your notes and questions to the tutoring session. 
• Plan ahead: tutors are often in high demand particularly during peak times (midterms & finals). Schedule your appointment at least one week before the assignment is due.
• Be prepared: before your tutoring session take the time to review your assignment, identify the areas where you are struggling, and draft questions you have. See the section below on what to expect during the tutoring session for additional tips on how to prepare. 
• Participate: tutors are students who have mastered being a successful college student and have a wealth of knowledge to share about the courses you are taking. Keep in mind they are not professors or content-experts. Tutors will share study strategies and will help you understand problems and concepts, but they will not do your work for you. Discussion and practice will help you gain clarity and master the content too. Show up on time and prepared for your tutoring session.

How to Schedule a Tutoring Session

• You must be a matriculated CSUDH student to access services and facilities.
• Drop-in sessions for in-center and online tutoring can be scheduled at the Learning Center's front desk and through the chatbox on the Services page, respectively.
• Online appointments may be scheduled through the Toro Success Collaborative (TSC). Students will require a confirmation email sent through toromail to verify that an appointment has been scheduled. Please visit the TSC page for more information.

What to Expect During the Tutoring Session

• Don't expect your tutor to "fix" your assignment.
• Take the time to understand your tutor's suggestions, and put them into practice.
• Be patient with yourself; building your skills will take time.
• Take responsibility for your work. Your tutor will offer suggestions and strategies, but it's ultimately up to you to complete the assignment.
• Give us your feedback on your tutoring sessions and our services, so we can keep improving them.

What to Bring with you to your Tutoring Session

• A copy or draft of your work.
• A copy of your assignment/professor’s instructions.
• Any other relevant materials (textbook, class notes, guides, etc.) concerning the topic you are seeking assistance.
• A list of questions or topics where you know you are struggling.
• For online appointments, students should email any relevant information or materials to their tutors at the start of their sessions.
